about

The Funeral of the Monk is a very
long piece using the entire power of the organ. It is
a story about the funeral of the monk, a very important
member of the Christian church. An inspiration to write
this composition came to me from the painting called
Cloister Graveyard in the Snow by Casper David Friedrich.
Many monks celebrate the ritual funeral in an old Gothic
church. They enter the church in pairs of a continuous
chain. They are dressed in black, full-length habits, with
hoods on their heads and hands clasped together, as if
in a prayer. They are going slowly, into the rhythm of
march-like music. They celebrate Mass and then go out
carrying the coffin, to the same rhythm as before and
with lighted torches in their right hands. It is getting
dusk. They head to an old, almost abandoned, cemetery
containing ruins of an old Gothic church. The whole
funeral celebration makes for an extraordinary spectacle
of a highly ritual character. The composition transports us
into an incredible fantasy land sprinkled with occasional
darkness, greyness, brightness, and appearing scenes of
changing seasons. It all makes the procession of monks
seem very long. The most noticeable aspect is the bleak
atmosphere of a severe, dark winter. Their walk through
the cemetery and the ruins is quite exceptional; it is
accompanied by gradual lighting of torches and candles
that are kept there and the opening of a secret passage.
The composition displays a connection between
two worlds, sacred and material. At first everything
takes place in a very spectacular material world. Next
the soul of the monk travels in the sacred realm. There
are angels, demons and stray souls of the dead. All kinds
of different gates, doors, passages, and corridors. There
are little imps at the gates of hell, too. They have black
wings and small forks, and they laugh viciously. There are
also satanic monks. The soul of the monk is tugged and
hauled from the dark to the bright side in a preliminary
judgement made over him. Finally however he manages
to force his way to the bright side and stay there for good.
Generally speaking the work takes place in both
gloomy and strongly fantastic sceneries. It actually tells
only about the funeral of the monk and his short journey,
but in a way that is quite broad and fanciful. Finally I
think it is worth adding that the funeral of the monk is
performed in the fifteenth century.
